Term 4 Week 1

These holidays have gone so fast! On Tuesday was the school Agricultural Day for students from three schools who were taking a lamb, goat or calf. I took a calf. The judging started at 10:00. The first judging was for leading, then rearing, then dairy type. I got nowhere in leading, 3rd in rearing and 2nd in dairy type.
For maths we are doing statistics. We are learning about graphs such as dot plots. For reading we had to read a short story by Ray Bradbury, then we had to make notes on it, and then write a short paragraph about Ray Bradbury.

Term 3 Week 10

This week for maths we have been learning about transformations. We have been learning how to translate shapes, use reflections with mirrors, rotate shapes and enlarge and reduce shapes. I have finished all of those learning intentions. I have published my poem and handed it in, and I am proud of it. This week we have been learning how to make videos on YouTube video editor. We had to make our own YouTube account. I have already made a video about funny dogs. In tech arts ( science ) we are making balloon cars. The school record is 16.23 metres, but I think my group will beat it.

Term 3 Week 9

This week for maths we learnt about compass bearings and how to find them. We also learnt about locus/loci. Compass bearings are like North, South, East, West, North West, North East, South West and South west. We learnt how to find degrees with compass bearings. I have finished all my maths and my reading task. My reading task is called 'Raymond's Run'.We had to write about setting, conflict, flat characters, round characters, antagonists, protagonists and theme. In writing at the moment we are writing poems. My poem is called 'A prayer for the 21st Century'. It is about what I imagine it will be like when I am old, like 90. This is my poem:

-=A prayer for the 21st Century=-
May the road be free for
the journey,
May it guide us where it promise
it would,
May the sky that holds lots
of memories,
Be remembered, be clearly
understood.
May every bird fly peacefully
May every disease be cured,
May sailors in crossing the
ocean,
Not fear the injured or dead.

May wildlife increase by millions,
May nature never be tamed,
May risks be taken upon humans,
May danger never be feared.
May the darkness stand to remind us,
Of what it means to be dead,
May we be outlived by our loved ones,
May we be outlived by our friends.

May the bombs rust away in the bunkers,
And war be declared no more,
May the scientists inventing happiness,
Be encouraged to get it done.
May the knife never be used,
May the bullet be taken out of the gun,
May those who live on the streets,
Turn into those in the sun.
- Jared

We got an copy of a poem like this written by John Marsden, who is an excellent author. I wrote most of this on my own, except I borrowed a few lines for it to make sense.

Term 3 Week 8

All week I have been busy doing my maths and reading tasks. I have done 790 words in my reading, and have finished nine learning intentions. We are learning geometry at the moment, and I didn't know anything about it, as my primary school didn't teach me it. At the start of the week I knew nothing about geometry and was kind of just sitting back and watching the teacher write up examples on the whiteboard to help us, but now I am one of the only ones who have finished all the highlighted work! We have been learning about how many sides polygons have, and finding out the missing pronumeral ( the little numbers ) and lots of other things that would take to long to tell you all about. Here is one of my Learning Reflections:

In this lesson of maths I learnt about angles in a polygon. E.g: A five sided shape is a pentagon. Pentagons have three triangles inside them, so they equal 540°, because a full triangle is 180°, and 180 x 3 = 540. You add all the numbers that are shown. You subtract that sum from 540 and that is your answer. If there were more than one letter you would divide your answer by however many letters there are. The rule is n-2=180, because if n was how many sides, you take away two and multiply by what the number you took two away from.

Term 3 Week 4

On Monday morning we had an assembly. On Monday in the middle block the year 8's did their speeches. On Tuesday morning we had tech ( fabric ). I am the first one to start sewing my bag. I am making it with a drawstring and a pocket inside. On Tuesday afternoon we went cross country running around the streets. On Wednesday morning we had Religious Instruction, and after that we had year 7's speeches. I did mine in the middle block. In the afternoon the year 7's had French, and then team jump jam.

The NZ Flag Shouldn’t Be Changed

The NZ flag, also known as the Union flag, has been our national flag since 1902. Now, 113
years on, the government has decided to go with the small group of New Zealanders and are going to change our flag. Personally I think the NZ flag shouldn’t be changed. It is a waste of 26 million dollars, all to change something that holds memories to be proud of, with a design that tells a story which defines us as a nation.

Our flag is one of many things that makes us a kiwi. 26 million dollars could be put to something in need like poverty. I believe the government need to realise that 26 million dollars is a lot of money, and people living on the streets, in the cold, every night, wish they just had enough money to get shelter. What I don’t get is how they are going to agree on a minimal number of flags to be able to vote - I mean there’s so many flags. And if they don’t vote it will be hard. If everyone wants their flag, or doesn’t want it changed, the government is going to have heaps of protesters on their doorstep, and I seriously think that if they do change it it won't last long.

The NZ flag was designed by Albert Hastings Markham in 1869, but it didn’t get changed to the national flag until 1902. In 1869, Sir George Bowen directed that the Southern Cross replace “NZ” on the Blue Ensign. The Southern Cross was represented by four five-pointed red stars with white borders to correspond with the colours of the Union Jack.

The New Zealand flag should not be changed or modified. People just think it looks like the Australian flag so we should change it. The Australian flag has five stars with seven points, & the NZ flag has four stars with five points. Soldiers have fought through war with the NZ flag, & changing it would be deleting special history. Our flag has represented sports like olympics and it is flown at Gallipoli in memory of all the people who fought for NZ. If we change the New Zealand flag then it is just going to cause more problems because whatever way they do it, there is still going to be people who disagree & that could lead to huge arguments.

New Zealand’s flag is special to the NZ people, and what is the point of changing it anyway, because if you look closely you can see that there is a difference in the Australian flag and the New Zealand by looking at the stars. Many people believe that we should change the flag, but then how will we agree what flag we should change it to?

Why don’t we change Australia’s flag instead? Why ours? Australia will probably just sit back and watch us argue over which flag to have. We have our own flag, which makes us unique, so why change it? The NZ flag is a special part of history, we’ve had it wherever we went, and now they want to change it? Modifying it is no different, why do we need to? There is nothing wrong with our flag, it is actually quite nice. People overreact with the flag, but to stop all the problems they should just keep the flag. Some people want the Maori flag as our national flag. Although it belongs in New Zealand it wouldn’t feel like my flag, because it shows pride in being Maori. The New Zealand flag is the symbol of the realm, government and people of New Zealand. Its royal blue background is derived from the ensign of the Blue Squadron of the royal navy. The stars of the Southern Cross emphasises this country's location in the South Pacific Ocean. The Union Jack in the first quarter recognises NZ’s historical origins as a British colony and dominion.
In conclusion I believe the NZ flag shouldn’t be changed, because it would be a waste of 26 million dollars just to change a flag. The government is making the wrong decision to change it, I believe. It is an important matter, so hopefully you agree with me. .

Blog Post Term 3 Week 3

On Monday morning, first we had assembly. On Tuesday morning we had tech ( fabric ). I finished painting my cushion, but the J is the wrong way around, because I accidentally turned the fabric over when I wrote the words around the border. On Friday we are going to sew them together and fill them with stuffing. Because I finished painting, I was allowed to make another tennis ball. It is blue and black. On Wednesday the year sevens had French in the afternoon. Straight after that we had jump jam. On Thursday the people that weren't in band had to help tidy the books up in the library.

Term 3 Week 2

On Monday morning we had assembly. On Monday afternoon we were going to have cross country practice, but it rained and so it was too wet, so we didn't end up doing it. On Tuesday morning we had tech ( fabric ). We have started to make our pillows. First we had to draw our design on paper. We had draw lines 7.5 cm from the edge so we ended up with a square in the middle. In the square we had to draw or write something. Around the outside we got to decorate it too. Then when we had finished it we had to get a square of fabric, and then we had to trace our work on the paper on to the fabric with a pencil. Then we had to go over the pencil marks with a vivid. On Friday we are going to paint them with acrylic paint. On Wednesday we had Mr McCabe in the morning. In the middle block we did an Australian maths test. In the afternoon the year 7's had french, and then we had jump jam. On Thursday afternoon the Te Awamutu College are coming for the college expo. Every year they come for the year 8's that are going there. They show what is for offer for them next year. The year 7's go to though.

Term 3 Week 1

This week on Monday we had assembly. We had it for an hour and fifteen minutes. In the afternoon we had cross country running instead of our ALC time. I ran one and a half laps which is two laps of the school field and one lap of Sherwin Park. On Tuesday morning we had tech arts. The year 7's have now started fabric with Mrs Kilgour, and the year 8's have started music with Mrs Germann. In the afternoon we did cross country again. I ran 2.1 kilometres. On Wednesday we did running again and I ran 2.8 kilometres this time, which is two laps of the field and Sherwin Park.

Term 2 Week 11

On Monday I wasn't at school. On Tuesday morning we had tech arts. I am making a shelf and door set. You open the door/s ( one on the top, one on the front ) and the are two shelves inside. I am nearly finished my LED runway too. On Friday is our last lesson of woodwork, as it is the end of the term. Next term we start fabric. On Wednesday I was away. On Thursday we had school singing. I didn't go because I did an Otago problem solving sheet. On Thursday afternoon we were meant to have Friday sport ( because we are having a student assembly we had Friday sport on Thursday and student assembly on Friday ), but it was raining so we didn't do it, so instead we did jump jam. On Friday middle block we had tech arts. In the afternoon we had student assembly because it was the end of term.

Term 2 Week 10

On Monday morning we had assembly. On Monday afternoon we went into the ALC ( Arts and Leisure Centre ) to play soccer. I scored two goals. We had to sub ourselves on and off, and workout who to sub off next. On Tuesday morning we had woodwork. We are making things with LED lights. I am making a plane runway, and I am nearly finished. I have soldered all the lights on but they didn't work so I have to put more tape around the edge, and change the circuit of the light because there is only three volts running through and there needs to be nine. Also the people that were going to Belmont ( a place in Auckland ) left in the morning. Every year Belmont kids travel to Te Awamutu intermediate to compete in a sports day, and TAI people travel to Belmont for the same reason. On Tuesday afternoon, the Belmont students arrived and went with their billets. On Wednesday afternoon the sports were on. We won rugby, lost soccer but I don't know about basketball and hockey.

Term 2 Week 7

On Tuesday morning the year 7's didn't have tech arts ( design/woodwork ), only the year 8's. It was because Mr Monk ( design/woodwork teacher ) was not at school for the morning unfortunately. Instead we did a maths test. On Wednesday afternoon we had french. We had to pair up with someone, greet them, ask them how they are, ask them their name and ask them to spell it. Straight after we had jump jam. On Thursday Mrs Crowe ( the teacher ) was at a funeral, so she was away the whole day. Mrs Duncan ( room 2's teacher had to keep on eye on us. Since we were so quiet she gave us all an honesty signature. Then we had school singing. In the afternoon block we had SSR then straight after we had student assembly.

Term 2 Week 5

On Monday afternoon for our ALC ( Arts and Leisure Centre ) time, we played volleyball. I was in the team on the far side closest to the stairs. On Tuesday morning we had our last lesson of tech for art. I completed my water colour art and my jandal too. On Wednesday afternoon the year 7's had French. Straight after we had jump jam, but I didn't do it. On Friday we are starting our new tech subject, design ( woodwork ).

Term 2 Week 4

This week it was our turn to put the chairs out for assembly, and also put them back. So when we got to school on Monday we had to go straight to the hall. On Monday afternoons it is our turn to use the ALC ( Arts and Leisure Centre ). This week we were going to play volleyball but the nets weren't out, so we had to play dodge ball instead. I didn't know how to play, but I quickly got the hang of it. On Tuesday was tech arts ( art ). I am still doing my water colour artwork, but I am nearly done. When I have finished I can start to bead my jandal. That means I will put beads on copper wire to make the thong part. On Wednesday afternoon the year 7's had French. Straight after that we had Jump Jam. I was sick on Thursday, so I didn't come to school. On Friday we have tech arts ( art ) again. We might have Friday sport, depending on the weather.

Term 2 Week1

This week was the first week of term 2. We had the softball semi-finals. It was rooms 5v4 and us (Room 3) v13. We unfortunately lost 10-8 which was our first loss of the season. Room 13 won in the final against room 5. On Tuesday we had tech arts. We are making clay jandals. This week we glazed them and my jandal is blue. We have also started a new artwork about our family and kiwiana. On Wednesday we had softball. We were playing for third and fourth. We (Room 3) were playing against room 4. I played and I hit some home runs. It was a pretty close game, and heading into our 3rd innings it was 9-9. We got ten more home runs, so it was 19-9 heading into room 4's 3rd innings. They only got four more home runs so we won 19-13. On Thursday we had school singing and my house (Waipa) won the point. On Friday morning we had an Anzac service in the hall. People talked about war, and Mr Oliver talked about his grandfathers who were in war. After that the head students lay a wreath against the flagpole. The last post was played and we all watched silently.

Wellington Camp

Sunday
Last week room 3 went to Wellington from Sunday to Friday. In the morning we started loading our stuff on to the bus at about 8:45 am. After we said goodbye to our families we set off to Wellington. Most of us had a device to take on the bus with us, and those who didn't shared with the people beside them. It was a long time on the bus but we had toilet stops and we stopped for lunch as well.

When  we got to our camp site it was about 5:30 pm. When we got out of the bus we unloaded our stuff and then went to find our cabins. I was in cabin number 85. Once we had unpacked our stuff we went on this big trampoline thing called the jumping pillow. It was really cool and fun even though it was wet. A few people got really dirty and wet because there was sand around it. They had to have an early shower.

My top 3 places we went to in Wellington.
1. Snorkeling
2. Zoo
3. Parliament

Snorkeling

Snorkeling was at Island Bay. I was in a group with Hayden and Mr Ranby. We went quite far out and saw heaps of big blue and silver fish. There were lots of small fish too. In the seaweed there were heaps of starfish. After we did snorkeling we went to the aquarium. There were heaps of starfish and fish. You were even allowed to pick up the starfish and kina. There were also turtles, seahorses, paua, an octopus and more.

Zoo
The zoo had heaps of cool animals and creatures. My favourite animal was the Gibbon. We saw Red Pandas, Gibbons, Bears, Tigers and much more. At the souvenir shop I got a baby chimpanzee, a bookmark and a Wellington Zoo band. I enjoyed it and would like to go there again and see more animals.

Parliament
When we got to parliament we saw Judith Collins walking inside. We went into a room to learn more about parliament. We watched a slideshow thing about parliament and what all the MP's do and how many hours a week they work. Then Barbara Kuriger came and talked to us. After that we went into the bit I enjoyed the most: listening to question time. All the MP's were talking over each other and some were even playing on their phones!

Learning Reflection-Term 1 week 7

Maths: This week in maths I did powers and BED-MAS. BED-MAS stands for Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction. Powers are numbers that have little numbers behind them. For example: 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, It would be easier to write two with a little eight beside it. The eight is there because it means there are eight twos in the equation.

Tech Arts: This week in tech arts we had to make up a dance and then show it to the others. We did it in the dance room. The dance had to be based on sports. My group did all right. My favourite move was when we did cannons on passing a rugby ball and a netball pass.

Writing: This week in writing we did Gallipoli writing again. I have almost finished and it is pretty good. I am happy with it and all I really need to do is edit my work and print it.

Camp: Next week we go on our camp to Wellington. We leave on Sunday and come back on friday. It is going to be really fun and I can't wait. We are going to Parliament and we are going on the Cable Cars and lots more.

Learning Reflection-Term 1 Week 6

Maths:This week in maths I learnt what prime and composite numbers were. Prime numbers are numbers that can only be divided by themselves and one. For example 13 is a prime number because nothing other than itself and one can be divided into it. A composite number is pretty much the opposite. 18 is a composite number because it is a number that can be divided by more than one and itself.

For an example: 2,13,18,24,
List the composite numbers: 2,18,24
List the prime numbers: 13

Tech Arts: This week in tech arts (music) we played music on the keyboard, guitar and drums. It was fun. We were doing tests and 1 is the lowest and 3 is the highest. I got a 3 in keyboard and drums, and either a 2 or 3 in guitar.

Writing: In writing this week we have been writing about Gallipoli. We have been doing it on the computers. We have to write a report about Gallipoli. We have highlighted all the facts we might need on a sheet of paper.

Term 1 Week 3

This week in music we learnt how to hold a guitar properly. We also learnt who Beethoven was and how he made music. Beethoven was deaf when he wrote his last few music pieces. So to know what the music sounded like he taped his piano on the floor and the piano vibrated and he felt it inside him and that was how he wrote his last music pieces. In maths I reminded myself how to round to the nearest ten and hundred etc. I learnt how to do power numbers. In french I learnt when and how to say greetings in french. For example: you say Bonjour and Salut in the daytime and at night you say Bonsoir in the evening. I learnt that you say mademoiselle for girls and monsieur for boys. You say Maman for mum and Papa for dad. This week we did two tests: spelling and punctuation. I remembered to take my time and only worry about my own work.

My Reflection-Week 2 Term 1

This week I reminded myself that face value means the number it self, Place value means the column that the number is in and total value means the number times its column.
I also learnt in music that the best guitarist in the world ( Tommy Emanual ) started playing the guitar at five. I also learnt how to play a few tunes on the keyboard. I learnt music keys such as minims, semibreves, crotchets and quavers.
I also set up my very own blog. I got to make my own name for it and choose my own background.
I also learnt where to go to get canteen food.
I learnt that every second week a man from the bible chapel comes to the school to do the religious instruction assembly.
I reminded myself to take my device to school every day, and to wear my shoes to assembly.
